An elderly Contra Costa County woman has become the second person to die of West Nile virus in California this year, health officials said Thursday.
Two other cases of the mosquito-born disease - one in a middle-aged woman who is recovering and another involving an elderly man whose diagnosis needs to be confirmed - also were reported in the county, said Susan Farley, a Contra Costa communicable diseases specialist.
County officials did not release any other information about the woman who died, but stressed that West Nile virus can only be acquired through mosquito bites, not human contact.
"We are calling on the community to use insect repellant with DEET when outdoors, limit the time spent outside at dawn and dusk, use screens on their windows and doors and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by dumping and draining all outside containers holding water," Farley said.
Earlier this month, an elderly Butte County resident was reported as the first Californian to die of West Nile virus this year. Along with the two deaths, there have been 84 human cases statewide, about half of the infection rate last year when 28 people died.
West Nile virus can cause fever, rash and fatigue, but symptoms usually only show up in about 20 percent of humans who acquire the virus. One in 100 infected people develop severe symptoms, and, of those cases, 3 percent to 15 percent die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
