By 2010, more than 12 million adults and 1 million children will be obese.
Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt made this statement on Friday that everyone should take responsibility for their own lives in the battle against obesity.
"Government's got responsibility to make it easier for people to make healthy choices for themselves, but at the end of the day it's up to each of us to decide what we eat, what we drink, how much exercise we take and how we bring our children up."
Around a third of adults and a fifth of all children will be obese according to statistics from the Health Survey for England.
Hewitt is calling for the government to step in and take charge of this problem and curb problems such as junk food advertising.
"These days, our health depends at least as much on what each of us do for ourselves and our children as it does what the Government and NHS does for us."
