US Muslim Delegation in Makkah

The Saudi Gazette , 2 September 2006

The winds of time have turned the pages of history and heaped dust upon the written facts. Islam was once looked at as a peaceful religion.

Now, however, the peaceful perspective has been erased. To the world outside, Islam is considered a source of terror and violence.

“Islam is today misunderstood,” said Abdullah Al-Turki, secretary general of the Muslim World League (MWL).

A delegation of 85 American Muslims met MWL representatives in Makkah Monday. According to Al-Turki, this delegation has met a number of people in discussions dominated by the current problems facing Islam.

“It was a chance for these Muslim Americans to enrich their knowledge about Islam and to visit Makkah and the Islamic colleges,” he said.

Among the main issues discussed were the role of the preacher and the media in projecting the true image of Islam. “Today, the media has reached every corner of the world,” said Hasan Ali Al-Ahdal, the league’s general director of media and culture.

Media today has the power to affect and change perspective and understanding, Al-Ahdal said. “The misunderstanding of Islam in the Western world and its dependence on false information has caused the Western media to project a bad image of Islam,” he explained.

Therefore, the preacher of Islam should have a full knowledge and a clear understanding of the truth and depth of Islam. “Islam reached people in Australia, Africa, America, and various other parts of the world out of the good manners of Muslims,” Al-Turki said.

The Muslim World League has been arranging courses inside and outside the Kingdom to help Muslims to understand the true fundamentals of Islam. “But more Islamic organizations need to arrange such courses, to help spread the profound image of Islam,” he said.

The media plays a strong role, whether negative or positive, in depicting Islam. “Although there is financial support, the Islamic world has, unfortunately, not been able to take control of this power to channel the profound massage of Islam,” Al-Ahdal said.

However, now there are media outlets contributing to the good image of Islam in foreign countries and for Muslim youth in those countries. “Terrorism is a worldwide phenomenon, and it’s not only restricted to Islam” Al-Ahdal said. “Every religion and culture has faced it.”

“We are thankful for every media that makes an effort to help spread the true image of Islam,” Al-Turki said. “The foreign media has a strong influence on youth all over the world, therefore it is important for the Islamic media to face any mistranslated understanding of Islam.”
