According to a research paper published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, the advantages of eating fish far outweigh any possible risks from mercury and other contaminants present in seafood.

According to the study undertaken by the Harvard School of Public Health, eating fish can reduce the risk of a heart attack by as much as 36 percent. The researchers say that this reduction in the chances of a heart disease can be brought about by eating two portions of fish every week that is by consuming about three ounces of framed salmon or six ounces of mackerel every week.

Eating fish can also result in decreasing overall morality rate by as much as 17 percent.
Fish are rich in omega- 3- fatty acids, commonly known as “good fats” and are present in higher quantities in oily fish like salmon than lean fish like haddock and cod. These fatty acids are known to offer protection from heart disease. These also help in early brain and cognitive development in infants and young children and are very beneficial for expectant mothers as well as nursing mothers.

But concerns are being raised over the presence of pollutants present in commonly available fish. The presence of contaminants like mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can offset the benefits of eating fish. They can cause learning disabilities and developmental delays in children and even lead to heart, nervous system and kidney damage in adults. Tilefish, Swordfish, King Mackerel and Shark are some of the large predatory fish's which live longer and are likely to absorb more toxins hence, should be avoided.

The study indicates that eating although eating seafood regularly has many health benefits but regular eaters of fish should eat a variety of different fish from the different sources to avoid the contaminants from a single source.

This study aims at bringing awareness in the public about the benefits of eating fish, dispel their fears and help them in figuring out which fish is beneficial for them.
